TULSA, Okla. – Sophomore
Jonty Giesen emerged victorious in a three-set thriller to clinch the comeback 4-3 win over Tulsa on Thursday morning, rebounding from a 4-1 Wednesday loss to Oral Roberts.
AT TULSA
A narrow loss in the doubles half of the match put Pacific (6-9) on the back foot early. Despite the loss, junior
Christof Schaertlin Coffey and freshman
Reuben De Klerk did pull out a 6-4 win, their sixth together this season and, playing on doubles court two, sport a 5-2 record.
Even in the singles portion, the Tigers had to overcome multiple deficits at 2-0 and 3-2. Schaertlin Coffey on court two and graduate
Terence Das on court three both won in straight sets to knot the match at two points each, but a court four loss meant Pacific would need to take the third set on courts one and five to win the match.
De Klerk pulled through for the Tigers on court five, cruising comfortably after dropping the first set to make it a 3-3 match.
Then on court one, Giesen clinched his eighth singles victory of the season and completed the comeback bid over the Golden Hurricanes (10-9). The sophomore now sports a two-match winning streak and is 5-5 playing on singles court one.
The win also avenges a postseason loss to Tulsa in 2024 after they met in the NIT Championship in Florida.
AT ORAL ROBERTS
The first match of the week, Pacific had a difficult time stringing together any momentum – falling early in the doubles portion and then three quick straight set singles losses.
Jonty Giesen was the lone Tigers point scorer, notching a straight set win on singles court one.
When doubles play halted, Schaertlin Coffey and De Klerk were in position to win their match, leading 5-3. De Klerk was also in position to win his singles match when play was stopped having won the first set and was locked in a tough battle in set two.
UP NEXT
The team plays its final four home matches of the season in a four-match homestand beginning next Friday against Dartmouth. Pacific will then open WCC play with home matches against Portland next Saturday and then Pepperdine/LMU the following weekend. Against LMU, the team will recognize graduate
Terence Das and senior
Riley Hillenbrand.
