No. 22 Pacific Beats Pomona-Pitzer to Conclude Bronco Invitational

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Ending the Bronco Invitational on a high note, the No. 22 Pacific women's water polo program ousted Pomona-Pitzer 14-10 Sunday in a neutral site match-up at Santa Clara.

The Tigers (5-5) got off to a fast 4-0 start, and after Pomona-Pitzer (3-8) came back to tie it in the third quarter, Pacific pulled away in the fourth. Pacific never trailed in the contest.

Junior Alicia Petkov registered four goals, while fellow junior Laia Marsinach Ortega tallied a hat trick. Junior Anna Crum, junior Ella Cowan and freshman Maria Ikonomou recorded two goals apiece.

Pacific's 4-0 lead came on goals from four different student-athletes including freshman Eleni Ikonomou. The Tigers led 6-1 at the 2:55 mark of the second quarter after a strike from Ortega.

Pacific was ahead 8-4 in the third when Pomona came back with four straight to even it 8-8 at the 2:34 mark. Though, it was short-lived as the Tigers punched back with a 6-0 spurt to put the game away as Crum made it 14-8 with 5:04 left in the fourth.

Sophomore Laurel Cooper played the whole way in net to earn the win and finished with five saves, two steals and an assist.

Pacific improved to 8-0 all-time against Pomona as it was the first meeting between the two teams since 2017. Pomona is the reigning Division III national champion after going 25-10 overall last year with a perfect 12-0 record in the SCIAC.

Up next, the Tigers will travel to Fresno Pacific for a 7 p.m. rematch Wednesday. Pacific won the first meeting this year 23-6 at home in the season opener.
