Men’s Tennis Bounces Back with Strong Showing Over New Mexico

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Sophomore Niv Zuckerman emphatically clinched a three-set win on singles court six to give Pacific the 4-1 win over New Mexico on Saturday morning, finishing the ITA Kickoff Weekend on a high note at the campus of UCLA.

Locked in a tight match entering set three, the sophomore blitzed his opponent 6-1 to shut the door on any New Mexico (2-2) comeback hopes. Zuckerman's clutch performance succeeded two hard fought wins from his fellow sophomores, Jonty Giesen and Nico Rating. On court two, Giesen opened strong with a 6-1 set one win and then grinded out a 6-4 triumph to clinch the team's second point.

Then on court five, Rating followed a similar path as Zuckerman to the win needing all three sets. Rating rebounded from a set one loss to blitz his foe in set two and then comfortably handled set three, 6-3, to put Pacific (2-1) on the brink of victory.

At the time of Zuckerman's match clinching point, sophomore Christof Schaertlin Coffey was a game away from playing hero himself.

He was, however, an integral part of Pacific's early lead, teaming up with freshman Reuben De Klerk on doubles court two to take a comfortable win over the Lobos. Zuckerman and Giesen put together a strong effort on doubles court one, breezing to a 6-2 win.

The Tigers are off now until February 4th when they will face their first true road test, making the short drive to face UC Davis.
