OAHU, Hawaii – The Pacific cross country team dominated the 24th annual Big Wave Invitational, clinching the title on the men's side while the women smashed records amidst a runner-up finish on Friday at Kapiolani Park.
The Tigers' men's squad earns its first team title in program history, sweeping the podium one through nine in the 6k. Behind sophomore
Angelina Lione's record-setting time in the 4k, the women secured second place for the fifth consecutive year at the Big Wave Invitational, putting together a strong performance.
"I'm proud of the men's team today, taking the race out hard and sticking with it for a win," said Pacific assistant cross country coach Cherise Roberts, who was managing the team for head coach Isaac Wood this week due to the birth of his child. "Women's team had some grit against Hawaii as they fought for their second place finish. I'm excited to see how they respond in future competitions."
Carrying the torch for the Pacific men was sophomore
Kohl Sanders, who represented the first of nine straight Tigers to complete the race. Sanders clocked in at 18:55.30, becoming the first Pacific men's runner to finish a 6k in program history.
The Tigers ultimately swept the top five spots in the men's race with freshman
Daniel Judd (18:57.80), freshman
Jett Davenport (19:02.90), junior
Logan Evans (19:06.80) and sophomore
Ian Thompson notching placements in that order from second to fifth.
Lione was the first Tiger to cross the finish line in the 4k with a time of 13:58.10, breaking the previous Pacific mark of 15:50.0 by Becky Grabow at the 2013 Nevada Twilight Cross Country Classic. It marks the second race this year that Lione has finished first for Pacific after doing so at the USF Invitational last week.
Not only did Lione break a record, but freshman
Emma Schmutz (14:43.90), junior
Valeria Espinoza (14:50.40), graduate student
Sophia Livingston (15:17.50), freshman
Daphne Iosua (15:27.60) and senior
Emily Wernli (15:33.40) all surpassed Grabow's 2013 record in the impressive showing in the Aloha State this morning.
Following their trip back to California, the Tigers will compete in their next race at the Kim Duyst Twilight Invitational, hosted by Stanislaus State on Saturday, Sept. 13.
