Portland Edges Pacific in Defensive Duel

STOCKTON, Calif. – In a tightly contested match, the Pacific women's soccer program came up on the wrong end of a 1-0 decision to Portland on Sunday afternoon at Knoles Field.

The matinee featured the Tigers (3-4-3, 0-1-1 WCC) and the Pilots (4-2-4, 1-0-1 WCC) playing to their strengths on defense with Portland striking for an early second-half goal as the difference in the West Coast Conference home opener.

Freshman Lis Van Herwijnen collected four saves in her fifth straight start, keeping the Tigers in the fight all day. Van Herwijnen prevented a key shot on goal by Portland late in the second half that kept the Tigers within striking distance.

Of the offensive scoring chances for Pacific, sophomore Sierah McCallum recorded a team-leading pair of Pacific five shots on target that came around the box. Senior Haley Johnson had arguably the best scoring chance for the Tigers, connecting on a header off a corner kick in the second half that was smothered by the Portland goalkeeper.

After a scoreless 45 minutes of play, the Pilots broke the deadlock in the 48th minute as Hailey Bagby netted her second goal of conference play, proving to be the lone goal of the match.

Pacific will continue WCC action next week, heading south to face Pepperdine at noon on Saturday, Oct. 4 in Malibu, California.
