SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Pacific volleyball forced CSU Bakersfield into 12 service errors and 23 attacking errors en route to a three-set (26-24, 25-19, 25-21) sweep of the Roadrunners on Saturday morning at The Nest.
Resulting from the high number of errors forced, the Tigers (6-5) defense limited CSU Bakersfield (3-9) to a .133 hitting percentage, the fifth time this season Pacific has held its opponent to a sub-.175 hitting percentage (4-1 record in such games). A large reason behind the strong defense was Pacific's 16 block assists. Led by graduate
Valentina Varani's six, four student-athletes recorded multiple block assists. Included in those four was sophomore
Alessia Couchond, who posted a new-career high three block assists. Her contributions didn't stop at blocks, however, as her first dig of the match was the 100th of her career and finished with five at the end of the match.
Sticking with digs, one day after setting a career-high, redshirt freshman
Mila Stojakovic topped that previous high and reached ten digs for the first time in her career. However, she was not the only Tiger to reach double figure digs in the match as graduate
Olivia Keller also recorded ten.
Moving over to the offensive side of the court, it was again Keller and Stojakovic leading the way. Keller put up a team high eight kills and Stojakovic served up three team aces. Couchond impacted the game offensively as well, adding 24 assists to facilitate the offense.
At the end of the Central California Challenge, Pacific posted the best record of 11-1 and clinched its fourth straight winning record going into conference play.
For Pacific, conference play opens up with a road matchup against Portland, a school the Tigers hold a 21-4 series advantage against.
