SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Pacific volleyball program held Fresno State to fewer than 30 kills in Friday afternoon's three-set (27-25, 25-23, 25-19) sweep of the Bulldogs at The Nest and opened the Central California with a win.
The Tigers (5-4) only allowed 27 kills on the night, marking the second time in the challenge that the Fresno State (3-6) offense was suffocated. And getting to the 27 kills was a challenge for the Bulldogs as the Pacific defense limited FSU to an inefficient .122 hitting percentage – the third time in four matchups FSU has been held under .150.
Leading the way for the Tigers were senior
Jayhlin Swain and graduate
Olivia Keller with eight digs apiece, but nine of the ten student-athletes that entered the contest recorded at least one dig.
However, where the senior leadership anchored the defense, it was the freshmen who stepped up offensively. Redshirt freshman
Mila Stojakovic reached double digit kills for the first time in career and led all players with 12 kills while freshman
Hannah Koester chipped in ten of her own.
Stojakovic also served up a career-high three aces, tying Swain for the team lead. Meanwhile Keller also notched an ace for the fourth consecutive match.
Senior
Logan Blutreich returned from a one game absence to contribute nine kills out of the middle and two total blocks.
Sophomores
Alessia Couchond and Aly Cox continued racking up assists with the former totaling 19 and the latter 17. For Couchond, the final of which represented the 300th of her career.
With the win, Pacific improves to 10-0 in the Central California Challenge and will go for 11-0 on Friday against host Sacramento State. First serve from The Nest is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
