NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Late pushes in sets three and four were not enough for the Pacific volleyball team to overcome CSUN as the Tigers dropped the four-set (25-18, 16-25, 23-25, 22-25) match to the Matadors at the Premier America Credit Union Arena in The Ridge Invitational.
In a refrain from the previous match, Pacific was at its best when graduate
Olivia Keller and freshman
Hannah Koester were both clicking offensively. The pair mirrored each other in set one with five kills apiece, as well as the match more broadly as both finished with 15 kills. Senior
Logan Blutreich was a force in the middle for the Tigers in set one, totaling three of her six match kills in the set.
Sophomore
Alyson Cox picked up the mantle as the featured player in the middle after the first set, compiling eight kills on 20 attempts. And true to her position, the sophomore was involved in the Tiger block by picking up five block assists, eclipsed only by graduate
Valentina Varani's six block assists and one solo block.
The other major source of Tiger offense came from the service line, serving up eight aces with three players finishing with multiple aces (Koester and Varani each had two alongside sophomore
Alessia Couchond's two).
Inside the service line, Couchond was active facilitating the offense with her 37 assists.
The assists were just one of the statistics Pacific held a slight team lead in over CSUN (2-0), out assisting the Matadors 49-46, held a 50-47 kill advantages, 61-60 in digs, 8-5 in aces and a 12-12 draw in blocks. The only category the Tigers did not outperform CSUN in was errors as Pacific committed 30 error to 19 Matador errs.
The team will look to end the weekend on a high note when Pacific matches up with Idaho State. The last team the schools met on the volleyball court; the Tigers took a 3-1 win over the Bengals in 1986.
