RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A dominant first quarter propelled the No. 23 Pacific women's water polo program over No. 21 Cal Baptist in a 13-11 win Saturday at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
Â
Pacific (8-6, 2-1 GCC) scored the first four goals of the game against CBU (9-12, 0-2 GCC) and carried a 6-1 edge at the end of the first quarter. The Lancers tried to claw back in the second half, but 14 saves by sophomore
Maja Lizy Dulic kept the door shut. The 14 stops were her second-highest total of the year.
Â
Offensively, another big performance came from junior
Dora Alaksza who found the back of the net seven times. It came after a record-setting 11 goals in the GCC opening win over Concordia University Irvine, which broke the school's single game record. Alaksza is up to a team-high 61 goals on the season and has scored at least five goals six times.
Â
Two goals apiece were scored by senior
Addison McGowan, sophomore
Anna Crum and sophomore
Alicia Petkov. Sophomore
Ella Cowan dished out a career-high six assists.
Â
The Tigers, who never trailed, went up 4-0 as Alaksza already had a hat trick to her name by the 3:03 mark of the first quarter. After CBU got on the board, Petkov and Alaksza upped it to 6-1 at the end of the first.
Â
The Lancers trimmed it to 7-4 late in the second, but a goal by Alaksza gave Pacific an 8-4 halftime lead. Petkov scored the first tally of the third quarter to increase it to 9-4.
Â
CBU kept battling and came as close as 11-9 with 6:17 to go in the fourth. Though, decisive goals by Alaksza and McGowan put it out of reach at 13-9 with 3:40 remaining.
Â
It was Pacific's 13th consecutive win over CBU and now hold an all-time advantage of 18-11.
Â
The Tigers close out a three-game road swing Saturday at 12 p.m. against Santa Clara. Pacific's next home match is Sunday, March 16 when it hosts No. 4 UCLA at 12:30 p.m. at the Eberhardt Aquatics Center.
