No. 13 LMU Gets Past No. 23 Pacific in Second Half

LOS ANGELES – The No. 23 Pacific women's water polo program played a strong first half, but No. 13 LMU responded in the second to take a 16-12 decision Friday at the Burns Aquatics Center.

The Tigers (7-6, 1-1 GCC) led by two goals at two different points of the second quarter and remained ahead 8-7 at the half after a buzzer beater by senior Ilyana Zlobinsky. Though, the Lions (12-9, 2-0 GCC) answered with a 6-2 third quarter to go up 13-10 and held on in the fourth.

Senior Addison McGowan led Pacific with three goals on three shots, and dished out two assists. It was her first hat trick of the season and she's up to 17 goals on the year.

A pair of goals came from junior Dora Alaksza, sophomore Ella Cowan and sophomore Anna Crum. Alaksza has scored in every game this year and upped her season tally to a team-high 54.

Zlobinsky, senior Natalie Johnston and senior Szamira Koppány each found the back of the net.

The Tigers trailed 3-1 early when they came back with a 4-0 run to lead 5-3, which included a pair of goals by McGowan. Another goal by McGowan kept them ahead 7-5 at the 2:52 mark of the second quarter.

After LMU came back to tie it, Pacific took an 8-7 edge into the half after Zlobinsky's buzzer beater. It was her fourth goal of the season.

Crum scored the first goal of the second half to put the team up 9-7. However, the Lions went on a 5-0 spurt to leap in front 12-9 late in the third. They increased it to 15-10 midway through the fourth before goals by Alaksza and Cowan.

The Tigers moved to 16-13 all-time against LMU.

Pacific will play another Golden Coast Conference match Saturday when it heads to No. 21 Cal Baptist for a 1 p.m. start at the Lancer Aquatics Center. The Tigers are 17-11 all-time against CBU and have won 12 in a row.
