STOCKTON, Calif. – Afforded a quick 3-0 lead against Gonzaga, the Pacific men's tennis team scored a hard-fought singles win from senior
Justas Trainauskas to stave off the Bulldog rally and take the match 4-2 Friday afternoon at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.
Junior
Tiago Silva was one of the main factors behind Pacific's (10-6) hot start, cruising to a 6-2 doubles win with his partner, freshman
Vraj Patel, before soundly securing his singles point with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph on court one. Silva has been a steady presence for Pacific in the doubles portion with a 9-2 record this season on court three.
His singles triumph has also given him four wins in the last five matches.
Sophomore
Christof Schaertlin Coffey was the Tigers' other two-point scorer of the afternoon, winning 6-1 on doubles court one and pulling out a 6-3, 6-3 win on court six in the singles. Nationally ranked in doubles, he and graduate
Ran Amar are winners of six of their last eight matches and are unbeaten since Feb. 22 against UNLV.
With that 3-0 lead, Pacific needed just one more match to clinch and Trainauskas was the prime candidate to play closer as he was already up a set. The senior did not falter down the stretch, coming up with several clutch rallies to win his match 7-5, 6-4 and move Pacific to 2-0 in WCC play.
Up next for the Tigers, a road match with LMU where they will attempt to score their first road win over the Lions since 2015. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
