Women’s Basketball Falls Just Shy of Senior Day Upset over Portland

STOCKTON, Calif. – Pacific was whistled for a known program-high 35 fouls against Portland that resulted in a 56-27 free throw discrepancy in Portland's favor to propel them past the Tigers 94-88 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

Four of five Pacific (13-17, 9-11 WCC) starters fouled out in the game after the quintet was called for ten fouls in the fourth quarter, affording Portland (28-3, 17-3 WCC) 18 opportunities at the foul line, 17 of which were converted compared to Pacific's 5-for-6.

Once in overtime, Portland again outshot the Tigers 7-for-7 from the line to 1-for-2.

The lone starter not to foul out, graduate Liz Smith was on the court for all 45 minutes of action and gave the fans a performance to remember with 19 points (7-for-14 FG, 3-for-6 FG), five steals and six assists. Entering the contest, Smith needed just 28 minutes to become the all-time leader in minutes played in Pacific history. Correlating with her number of minutes played, she also assumed the mantle of Pacific's all-time games played leader by appearing in her 130th career contest.

Should Smith start next week's WCC conference tourney game, she will be the ninth Tiger in program history to start 100 or more games in her career.

Already in that club are seniors Anaya James and Elizabeth Elliott – both of whom also produced highly productive final home efforts. The former scored 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting with seven assists and two three-pointers. The latter for her efforts netted 18 points on 6-for-7 shooting with five rebounds – the second of which made her the ninth player in program history to reach 700 career rebounds.

Elliott ended the regular season near automatic from the foul line as she converted 6-of-7 chances today against Portland (28-3, 17-3 WCC) and 20-for-21 over the final four games.

Junior Sydney Ward posted several career-bests in the contest including 16 points (3-for-4 FG) and ten free throws made on fourteen attempts. She also drew 12 fouls against Portland and racked up five rebounds and three steals.
