STOCKTON, Calif. – Pacific volleyball dispatched Seattle Thursday night behind standout performances offensively from freshman
Mazi Smith and defensively from sophomore
Alyson Cox, netting the three-set (25-16, 25-20, 26-24) sweep from the Alex G. Spanos Center.
Smith's night was a career one, setting a new career-high 13 kills that led all student-athletes on the night. The freshman has flourished inside the friendly confines of the Spanos Center, averaging 8.25 kills/match across the eight home matches. Right behind Smith was graduate
Olivia Keller and her 11 kills, with kills ten and 11 coming on the final two points of the match to clinch the victory.
But it wasn't just the outside hitters that contributed offensively for the Tigers (8-15, 2-10 WCC), the middle blockers of freshman
Chloe Grever and graduate
Valentina Varani gave the team five kills each.
Cox proved a versatile piece of the Pacific game plan, garnering her eight kills from a combination of the middle and outside. However, the Boise native made the bulk of her contributions to the offense as a facilitator, adding 16 assists to her season total. She would also add two service aces.
Sophomore
Alessia Couchond led the way assisting her teammates at 20 assists.
On the defensive half of the court, Cox was equally valuable, digging five balls and totaling a solo block and two block assists.
Her prowess opened opportunities for her teammates to shine, with senior
Jayhlin Swain leading all players with 19 digs, more than doubling the highest total on Seattle (6-16, 0-11 WCC) – eight digs from Tiana Mariner.
And Varani was able to stuff the Redhawks a total of four times, split evenly between solo blocks and block assists.
Keller flirted with her seventh double-double of the season, finished second on the team with nine digs.
Pacific will look to carry over the momentum into the next match, heading on the road for the second look at Santa Clara. The first match of the season was tightly contested as Pacific lost by a combined nine points. First ball from the Leavey Center is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
