STOCKTON, Calif. – Sophomore
Alyson Cox capped off an impressive weekend with the most single-match service aces since 2023 but was unable to help power Pacific to the victory, instead falling in four sets (19-25, 25-22, 17-25, 16-25) to Santa Clara at the Leavey Center on Saturday afternoon.
Cox became the first Tiger since Biamba Kabengele in 2023 against Pepperdine to reach the milestone and finished one service ace away from cracking the all-time top ten in single match service aces. This came one match after she had posted two aces to help Pacific (8-16, 2-11 WCC) to a win Thursday, and now has a service ace in three consecutive matches.
In addition to her career day serving, the sophomore put up a personal best 29 assists facilitating the offense. She was also active defensively with 11 digs and two block assists, giving her her fourth double-double of the season, in addition to her triple-double.
The main recipients of her assists during the match were freshman
Mazi Smith and graduate
Olivia Keller. For her part, Smith eclipsed her previous career high for the second time in as many matches, leading the team with 15 kills. This caps a weekend in which she put up 14 kills per match and double-digit kills in both matches. The Pampa, Texas native notched her first career double-double with ten digs
Keller meanwhile finished right behind Smith with 12 kills and has reached double digit kills in five consecutive matches. Like Cox, the graduate was able to reach a double-double after co-leading the team at 11 digs.
Freshman
Bella Gutierrez also dug ten balls.
Graduate
Valentina Varani matched her career-high in the middle, adding seven block assists to her ledger.
Pacific will take its second bye date of the season in the coming week, playing only once. That one match will be the final home match of the season, celebrating senior day against Oregon State. Seniors
Jayhlin Swain and
Logan Blutreich, alongside graduate
Olivia Keller and
Valentina Varani, will be celebrated after the match for their dedication to the program.
The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
