Volleyball Falls in Road Bout to Undefeated San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Pacific volleyball found its rhythm in the third set but could not force a fourth and ended the night with a three-set loss (14-25, 15-25, 23-25) to San Diego on Tuesday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

In that third set it was senior Logan Blutreich setting the tone for the Tigers (8-20, 2-15 WCC) with five of her match-high 11 kills in the frame and did so on an extremely efficient seven swings. The rest of Blutreich's night was equally efficient as she finished her 11 kills with one error and 15 attempts (.667 hitting percentage).

Beyond Blutreich, the defensive duo of senior Jayhlin Swain and freshman Bella Gutierrez handled everything the Toreros (24-4, 17-0 WCC) offense hit at them in set three, finishing with five and eight digs respectively to out dig USD 18-11. As a result of her eight digs, it gave Gutierrez the match high in digs with 12 and double digit digs in three straight appearances and four of the last five.

Sophomores Alessia Couchond and Alyson Cox returned to splitting time as the team's primary setter and finished 19 and ten assists respectively. The latter was able to also contribute four kills and five digs. The former however made her other contributions at the service line, finishing with two aces, and defensively with seven digs.

Graduate Valentina Varani continues her late season push as an offensive threat by tallying six more kills but was unable to get either of the two blocks necessary to push her to the century mark.

She will have one more opportunity to find the two blocks in the season finale at LMU on Saturday at 1 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
