Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Rejects Oregon State in Overtime for Fourth Consecutive Win

STOCKTON, Calif. – One possession after graduate Liz Smith gave the Pacific women's basketball program a one-point lead, junior Sydney Ward blocked Oregon State's game winning attempt to clinch a 67-66 win over the Beavers on Saturday at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

Ward's rejection extended her streak to now three straight games with a block and eight of the past 10 games she's blocked at least one shot. The junior also finished with four rebounds and three points, all from the free throw line.

Shouldering the majority of the offensive duties was senior Anaya James who went for a game-high 24 points on 9-for-18 shooting, 2-for-5 from three and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Against the Beavers now this season she's averaging 23 points per game and 25.7 in her career – having scored 20+ in all three career games against Oregon State (9-12, 5-5 WCC). James also finished with four assists and three steals. Sitting at 49 steals this season, her next steal will make her and Smith one of just three pairs of teammates in the country with 50+ steals this season (Longwood has 3 players and West Virginia 2 players).

In addition to sinking the go-ahead free throw, Smith finished her night with 13 points (3-for-11 shooting and 6-for-9 from the free throw line), 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals.

Making her return from a four-game absence, senior Elizabeth Elliott contributed 10 points and 5 rebounds off the bench in 24 minutes played.

Sophomore Jamie Kent tied her career-best nine rebounds, and a career-best two blocks, in the contest to lead all players while freshman Daria Nestorov provided six points off the bench by way of sinking two three-pointers.

With this win, Head Coach Bradley Davis claimed sole possession of second place in Pacific's all-time wins list. Now at 136 wins, he officially passed Lynne Roberts, his predecessor, and sits five wins away from claiming the title of winningest coach in program history from Melissa Taketa (140 wins).

In the standings, Pacific moved up to a fourth-place tie with Washington State and San Francisco after the Cougars lost today to LMU. Washington State currently owns the tiebreaker over both Pacific and USF, but Pacific owns the tiebreaker over the Dons. This will change Thursday however as the Cougars are Pacific's next opponent – squaring up Thursday from Pullman, Washington. Tipoff from Beasley Coliseum is scheduled for 6 p.m.
