Volleyball’s Streak Comes to an End in WCC Opener at LMU

LOS ANGELES – The longest winning-streak in a decade for the Pacific volleyball program came to a close Thursday after LMU grabbed a 3-1 (25-20, 19-25, 25-20, 25-20) decision in the West Coast Conference opener at Gersten Pavilion.

The Tigers (10-3, 0-1 WCC) entered the match having won nine in a row, their longest streak since 2014. Though, they played a tough LMU (9-3, 1-0 WCC) squad that is unbeaten at home this season.

Graduate Alexa Edwards, who entered the night ranked No. 7 in the nation in kills and leading the conference with 4.40 per set, smashed a match-high 17 kills. She registered her ninth double-double of the year with 12 digs and also tallied three blocks.

A double-double also came from senior Jenna Heller who notched 32 assists and 14 digs. It was her team-leading 10th double-double of the season.

Junior Jayhlin Swain dug up 17 balls after entering the night ranked second in the league in digs per set with 4.25. Graduate Darina Kumanova, who was named the AVSR Global Player of the Week on Monday, ended with 16 digs and eight kills.

Pacific won the second set after breaking away from an 11-11 tie. A kill by senior Abby Miller put them up 12-11 and the Tigers extended it to 17-12 after an LMU attack error on Kumanova's serve. A kill by graduate Margherita Giani upped it to 22-15, and Kumanova finished it off 25-19 with a spike.

The Tigers held early leads in both the third and fourth sets but the Lions were able to come back. Pacific was up 11-7 in the third and 10-7 in the fourth before LMU made its move. The fourth was tied 18-18 after an ace by sophomore Dylan Gilkey, but the Lions took the next three points to create slight separation.

Pacific will look to bounce back Saturday when it battles preseason favorite Pepperdine at 12 p.m. at Firestone Fieldhouse. The home opener is set for Saturday, Oct. 5 at 12 p.m. against Santa Clara.
