Volleyball Blanks CSU Bakersfield for Eighth Win in a Row

FRESNO, Calif. – Upping its winning-streak to eight, the Pacific volleyball program swept CSU Bakersfield 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-20) Saturday at Save Mart Arena.

The Tigers (9-2) are on their longest winning-streak since 2014 when they won 10 in a row.

Graduate Alexa Edwards, the reigning West Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week winner, registered a team-high 15 kills to go along with eight digs. She was one of two Pacific student-athletes to tally double-figure kills along with graduate Darina Kumanova who notched 11 and a .421 hitting percentage.

Dishing out 32 assists was senior Jenna Heller who also finished with four digs, three kills and a couple blocks. Junior Jahlin Swain and sophomore Dylan Gilkey posted 14 and 10 digs, respectively.

The first set was even mid-way through at 15-15 when a kill by Kumanova swung momentum. The Tigers used a kill by Edwards to lead 20-17, forcing a CSU Bakersfield timeout. An attack by junior Emily Van Groningen ended the frame.

The Tigers trailed 9-6 in the second when a kill by Van Groningen sparked a 4-1 run to tie it, 10-10. A spike by Kumanova put Pacific ahead 12-11, and the Tigers started to pull away 18-14 on a block assist by Kumanova and Van Groningen. The Tigers won the final three points of the set which included a kill by Heller.

The third set was tied 11-11 when the Tigers reeled off six in a row on Van Groningen's serve to catapult in front 17-11. The spurt included a pair of aces and a couple of kills by Edwards. The closest the Roadrunners came the rest of the way was 23-19, but kills by Kumanova and Edwards finished it off.

Pacific improved to 8-1 all-time against CSU Bakersfield including 3-0 on a neutral court.

The Tigers will conclude the weekend with a 12 p.m. Sunday match against Sacramento State. Pacific is going for its third consecutive non-conference tournament win.
