Volleyball Carries Winning-Streak into GCU Classic

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Riding a three-match winning-streak, the Pacific volleyball team will play three matches over the weekend beginning with a 4:30 p.m. bout Friday against Butler at Global Credit Union as part of the GCU Classic.

The weekend schedule will continue with a 4:30 p.m. Saturday match against Portland State before concluding with a 2 p.m. Sunday match against the host Grand Canyon.

Leading the way for the Tigers through six matches is graduate outside hitter Alexa Edwards, who surpassed sixth-place in the school's all-time career kills records after producing 63 kills in Charleston last weekend. Edwards ranks in the top five on the team in kills (109), digs (69), blocks (11.0), aces (5) and assists (6).

Aiding her is senior setter Jenna Heller, who's 233 assists rank first on the team and 8.63 assists per set rank fifth in the West Coast Conference. On the defensive side, Heller is third on the team in digs (68) and blocks (10.0). She is now eighth in career assists with 2,835.

Junior transfer libero Jayhlin Swain is a pillar to the Tiger defense, leading the way with 105 digs. Her 3.89 digs per set currently ranks fourth in the WCC. Another pillar lies in junior middle blocker Emily Van Groningen. Her 21.0 blocks pace the team while her 57 kills aid the Tiger offensive efforts.

Heller, Edwards and Van Groningen all earned tournament recognition in the College of Charleston Classic last week, with Edwards earning MVP honors. For Edwards, it was back-to-back all-tournament mentions after making the Rebel Challenge all-tournament team during opening weekend.

The Tigers face Butler for only the second time in program history. The two previously met in Indianapolis in 2019, with Pacific taking the match 3-2.

On Saturday, the Tigers and Vikings square off for the eighth time since 1981. Portland State holds the series edge 4-3, last defeating the Tigers 3-2 in the National Volleyball Invitation Championship in 2021. Pacific is 1-1 on a neutral court against Portland State, while the Tigers search for their first win over the Vikings since 2012.

Pacific closes the weekend against Grand Canyon as the two meet for the first time. The Lopes will become a more frequent foe for the Tigers as they are set to join the WCC in 2025.

Live stats and live stream are available for all matches. An ESPN+ subscription is required for Pacific at Grand Canyon. Pacific's neutral site matches against Butler and Portland State incur a five dollar fee to stream through GCU's watch service.
