BRADENTON, Fla.- The No. 60 Pacific men's tennis team contends for the NIT Championship title after sweeping No. 3 seed and No. 56 ranked Liberty 4-0. The Tigers take on the tournament's No.1 seed Tulsa in the final on Wednesday, May 8 at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. at 6 a.m. PST.
The Tigers orchestrated the sweep after clinching the doubles point behind wins on courts one and two. After the Flames took court three, sophomore
Tiago Silva and freshman
Tommy Czaplinski downed Deji Thomas-Smith and Chase Robinson 6-3. Junior
Justas Trainauskas and senior
Ran Amar extinguished the Flames in the tiebreaker after a contested battle on court one. The duo nabbed their first win together 7(7)-6(3).
Czaplinski struck first in singles, downing Matija Samardzic 6-2, 7-5. The freshman moves to 2-0 on the week after capturing his sixth win this year.
Sophomore
Terence Das followed suit on court three, defeating Thando Longwe-Smit 6-4, 6-3. Das remains unbeaten on court three with a 7-0 record as the sophomore moves to 16-4 overall in singles.
Clinching both matches in back-to-back performances was Amar. The senior captain downed Rodrigo Santiago 6-3, 6-3 to finalize the shutout 4-0 days after solidifying Pacific's spot in the semifinal. Amar is now 6-1 from court four.
The Tigers improved to 19-5 on the season after defeating last season's NIT champion. Like the other two opponents they have faced in the NIT, the Tigers meet Tulsa for the first time in the all-time series.
Tulsa holds a 17-13 record overall after defeating No. 59 Santa Clara and Saint Louis in the first two rounds. At the American Athletic Conference Championship, the Hurricanes advanced to the quarterfinal before falling to Rice 4-1. Pacific will be Tulsa's tenth ranked match up this year and the Hurricanes are 2-8 in such contests.
The tournament final will be streamed on Prime Video.
