STOCKTON, Calif.- Sophomore
Tiago Silva propelled the Pacific men's tennis team to its 13th straight match win after securing two winning tiebreakers in his first and third sets, guiding the Tigers to the 4-3 win over No. 13 San Diego.
Pacific started down early after the Toreros grabbed the doubles point with wins on courts one and three, but the Tigers dug in deep as a battle unfolded on all six singles courts.
San Diego got up 2-0 after a win on court five, but senior
Peter Alam got the Tigers on the board after a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Ruland Lambert on court one. The senior remains unbeaten this season, improving to 10-0 while holding an unblemished 4-0 record from court one. The Toreros responded with a win on court two to move within striking distance of the match, leading the Tigers 3-1 with the final three courts left to be decided.
Redshirt sophomore
Terence Das chipped at the lead after downing Sacchitt Sharrma 6-4, 6-3 from court four, before senior
Andre Rodeia tied the match 3-3 with a gritty 6-4, 6-4 win over Neo Niedner on court six.
All eyes turned to court three as first place hung in the balance for the West Coast Conference's final unbeaten teams. Silva led Savriyan Danilov after clinching his opening set 7(7)-6(5), but the Torero grabbed the second 6-2 to force a third. In a final back and forth, the two ended up in another tiebreaker after Silva tied it 6-6. The tiebreaker remained competitive throughout, before Silva pulled away, securing the match for the Tigers 7(7)-6(5), 2-6, 7(7)-6(5).
The Tigers claimed their first ever conference win over the Toreros since rejoining the WCC in 2013 and first win over San Diego since 2010. The win snapped San Diego's eight match winning streak, the second longest active streak in the conference. Pacific now holds first place outright in the league with a 4-0 record in conference matches.
Pacific heads out on the road for a tough stretch, playing four matches in six days. First, the Tigers travel to San Luis Obispo to face No. 49 USC and Cal Poly between Wednesday, April 10 and Thursday, April 11. They end the week with road matches against No. 53 Santa Clara and Saint Mary's.
