PORTLAND, Ore. – The Pacific baseball team dropped the series opener to Portland, 7-2, on Friday night at Joe Etzel Field.
The Tigers (5-24, 1-6 WCC) and the Pilots (18-9, 4-0 WCC) starter their respective aces on the mound, but the duel went to the way of the home team.
Sophomore
Jack Metcho led off the contest with a sharp single, going 1-for-4 on the evening with his 16th RBI of the season. Metcho has reached base safely in all but one game this season.
Junior
Ethan Shaver made his eighth start of the season, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing seven runs on five hits while striking out four batters.
Portland got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning, crossing home three times on four hits in the frame. The Pilots tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to hold a 5-0 lead early on.
Following a one-out double by senior
Jacob Weiss and an error, Metcho brought home Weiss with an RBI groundout to cut into the Pilots lead, 5-1.
The Pilots scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning by way of a solo home run and an RBI on a fielder's choice.
In the top of the eighth inning, sophomore
Jake Tandy drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, knocking in his team-leading 21st RBI of the season and resulting in the final score of 7-2.
The Tigers return to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday, continuing the three-game series against the Pilots.
