PORTLAND, Ore. – On a rainy night, the Pacific baseball team got on the board first, but ultimately fell to Portland, 12-1, on Saturday at Joe Etzel Field.
The Tigers (5-25, 1-7 WCC) battled the weather and the pitching as the Pilots (19-9, 5-0 WCC) used a balanced attack to take the middle game of the three-game series.
Junior
Jakob Guardado collected one of the four hits for Pacific on the night, going 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Redshirt junior
Josh Souza made the start on the mound, pitching 2.0 innings and allowing three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out one batter.
The Tigers scored the game's opening run in the top of the second as back-to-back singles started a rally. Senior
Jacob Weiss brought home Guardado on an RBI groundout to give Pacific the early 1-0 lead.
Portland responded in the bottom of the frame with three runs on two hits and two walks, taking a 3-1 lead.
Both pitching staffs locked in until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Pilots scored a pair of runs on a two-RBI double.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Portland brought two runners home on a two-out, two-RBI double to extend its lead to 7-1.
Two runs scored in the bottom of the seventh inning and three more in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the 12-1 final score.
Pacific returns to action at 1 p.m. tomorrow, closing out the three-game series against Portland.
