No. 21 Pacific’s Comeback Short in GCC Semifinals

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A hard-fought effort in the second half was not enough for No. 21 Pacific women's water polo to complete the comeback in the 11-8 loss to No. 9 Fresno State in the Golden Coast Conference semifinals on Saturday at Sullivan Aquatic Center.

Sophomore Noemi Alaksza and junior Hila Futorian both led the Tigers with three points on two goals and one assist. Freshman Ella Cowan registered a season-high five assists.

Freshman goalkeeper Maja Lizy Dulic posted her ninth double-figure performance in saves with 10 while also grabbing three steals.

Pacific (16-10, 4-3 GCC) was held to just two goals in the first half. Fresno State (20-7, 6-1 GCC) jumped out to a 3-0 start in the first period. The Tigers didn't get their first goal of the game until the 3:39 mark when junior Addison McGowan scored on the powerplay. Noemi Alaksza notched Pacific's second goal of the first half at 4:57 in the second period.

Fresno State took the 8-2 advantage at halftime.

The Tigers came out hot in the second half as they outscored the Bulldogs, 6-3.

The third period started with Noemi Alaksza and Futorian registering back-to-back goals to cut Fresno State's lead to four, 8-4. Sophomore Dora Alaksza threw the ball past the goalkeeper in the final seconds to make it a 9-5 game going into the fourth.

The Bulldogs responded with two goals to extend their lead, 11-5. The Tigers tallied three consecutive goals that made it a three-point game with under four minutes left, but it was not enough to make the comeback.

Pacific attempted 22 shots and posted a .364 shooting percentage while Fresno State notched 28 on a .393 percentage.

Up next, the Tigers close out the season against No. 23 San Diego State in the third place game at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
