LA JOLLA, Calif. – Senior
Jacob Weiss launched his first home run of the season in an eighth inning rally, but the Pacific baseball team ultimately dropped the second game of the series to UC San Diego by a 9-4 score on Saturday afternoon at Triton Ballpark.
The Tigers (2-12) were able to rally for a three-run spot in the top of the eighth inning, but the Tritons (11-3) held onto the victory with a balanced effort on the mound and at the plate.
Weiss carried the torch for the Tigers' offense with a pair of hits, including a three-run homer that cut the Tritons' lead to 5-4 in the late stages of the ball game.
Sophomore
Jack Metcho reached base for a 14
th consecutive game, going 1-for-3 with an RBI single, a run scored and a walk.
Junior starter
Josh Souza made his fourth appearance for the Tigers, throwing 4.0 innings and allowing three earned runs on three hits while striking out one batter.
Pacific scored the game's opening run in the top of the first with Metcho hitting a two-out single that scored sophomore
Kaden Petersen from second.
Souza did not allow a hit until the Tritons tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, UC San Diego capitalized on a bases loaded situation, scoring eventually four times in the frame to take a 5-1 lead.
Weiss made things interesting in the top of the eighth, crushing a home run to left field that cut the Tritons' advantage to 5-4. A pinch-hit double and a walk brought the Tigers within reach of tying the contest still in the frame, but the Tritons got the final out of the inning to preserve their lead.
UC San Diego tacked on four runs in the bottom of the eighth which included a three-run home run. The Tritons would go on to win by a final score of 9-4.
The Tigers return to action at 1 pm tomorrow for the series finale against the Tritons.
