MALIBU, Calif. – Sophomore
Jake Tandy played a pivotal offensive role as the Pacific baseball team opened West Coast Conference play with a 9-6 victory on Friday at Eddy D. Field.
The Tigers (5-16) have won back-to-back games for the first time this season and earn their first win in conference play. The Waves (5-17) drop to 4-10 at home.
Tandy carried the torch on offense, going for 4-for-5 with a game-high four RBIs and a run scored. The first baseman's four hits and four RBIs in a game are a career high.
Sophomore
Jack Metcho and senior
Jacob Weiss hit key insurance home runs late in the ball game, propelling the Tigers to victory on the road.
Junior
Ethan Shaver picked up his second win of the season, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out two batters.
The Tigers drew first blood in the top of the first inning with four straight two-out singles to take a 2-0 lead. Tandy and senior
Chase Graves drove in those runs.
Pepperdine responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring a pair of runs to tie the game.
Both offenses went quiet until the top of the sixth inning when Tandy roped an RBI double in the gap, scoring sophomore
Kaden Petersen to give Pacific a 3-2 edge.
Metcho's first home run of the season gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh. The Waves answered with a run of their own on a sacrifice fly.
In the top of the eighth inning, Weiss crushed his second homer of the season, which was a three-run blast to left field for a 7-3 Pacific advantage.
The Waves wouldn't go away as they countered with three runs to make it a one-run ball game with a 7-6 score, in favor of the Tigers.
Tandy capped his big day at the plate with a two-run single in the top of the ninth to provide a three-run cushion heading into the home half of the ninth.
Pepperdine was able to get the tying run on base, but the Tigers escaped the jam and held on for the 9-6 victory.
The Tigers continue their conference-opening series against the Waves at 1 pm tomorrow.
