MALIBU, Calif. – The Pacific baseball team dropped game two of its three-game series against Pepperdine by a 13-6 score on Saturday at Eddy D. Field.
The Tigers (5-17, 1-1 WCC) fall to 1-1 in West Coast conference play while the Waves (6-17, 1-1 WCC) earn their first WCC victory of the season.
Senior
Chase Graves was a spark on offense, hitting his second home run of the season, which gave Pacific a 4-1 lead midway through the game. However, the Waves' eight-run sixth inning fueled a late surge for the home team as they powered their way to a season-high 13 runs.
Sophomore
Kaden Petersen and sophomore
Jake Tandy each collected a pair of hits in the effort offensively for the Tigers.
Redshirt junior
Josh Souza made his sixth start of the season, earning a no decision in 5.0 innings of work and allowing just one run on five hits.
The Waves got on the board first in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.
Pacific responded immediately in the next frame as Graves surprised the Waves' defense with a squeeze bunt that scored freshman
Gabe Camacho from third base, tying the game up at 1-1.
Both starting pitchers would pitch cleanly from there until the top of the sixth when Graves crushed a three-run home run to left field to give Pacific a 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Waves scored eight times, including a grand slam in the inning, to give the home team a 9-4 edge.
Sophomore
Rylan Evans hit his first home run of the season as part of a two-run top of the seventh inning, cutting into Pepperdine's lead, 9-6.
The Waves would score two in the bottom of the seventh and two more in the bottom of the eighth to eventually secure a 13-6 victory and even up the conference-opening series between the Tigers and Waves.
Pacific returns to action tomorrow at 1 pm with the rubber match against Pepperdine.
