BEAUMONT, Texas – After a lengthy delay of lightning and rain, the Pacific baseball team turned in a spirited performance on the mound led by junior starter
Ethan Shaver, but ultimately dropped the series opener, 3-1, on Friday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
The Tigers (3-14) led for most of the contest, but a late eighth-inning rally propelled Lamar (13-4) to a series-opening win after a six-hour delay from the originally scheduled start time.
Shaver and Lamar starter Brooks Caple went toe-to-toe from the get-go as Shaver wheeled and dealt 5.1 shutout innings with a single game-high seven strikeouts in his fifth start of the season.
Sophomore
Kaden Petersen recorded another two-hit night for his fourth multi-hit performance of the season. Sophomore
Jack Metcho extended his on-base streak to a season-long 17 games, going 1-for-4 with a single that brought home the Tigers' lone run of the night.
After five scoreless innings, Pacific broke the deadlock in the top of the sixth. Sophomore
Tony Otis hit a single to left field, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error. Two batters later, Metcho delivered in the game's first run with a single through the middle to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Lamar's bats were limited to just three hits through seven innings, but in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs, the Cardinals took advantage of a throwing error to level the game up at 1-1. The following batter gave the home team a 3-1 lead with a two-run home run to left field.
The Tigers brought the tying runner up to the plate in the top of the ninth inning, but they could not find any late-game magic to tie it up, resulting in a 3-1 final score in favor of Lamar.
Pacific returns to action tomorrow with a scheduled first pitch for 3 pm against Lamar in game two of the three-game series.
