BEAUMONT, Texas – With forecasted rain in the area tomorrow, the Pacific baseball team played a doubleheader on Saturday and dropped both games by scores of 5-1 and 3-0 at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
The Tigers (3-16) mustered just four hits in each game while Lamar (15-4) maintained a lead and took control through strong pitching en route to a series sweep.
Game 1: Lamar 5, Pacific 1
Sophomore
Rylan Evans picked up his first multi-hit performance of the season, going 3-for-4 with a run in the effort offensively for Pacific. Sophomore
Kaden Petersen drove in the lone run for the Tigers with an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning.
Redshirt junior
Josh Souza made his fifth start of the season for the Tigers, going 4.2 innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits. His three strikeouts were a single game-high for this season.
Lamar got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Cardinals hit a two-out, three-run home run to go on top 3-0 at the midway point of the contest.
The home team tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 4-0.
Pacific scored in the top of the seventh on Petersen's no-out RBI double to left center that brought home Evans to cut into the Cardinals' lead, 4-1.
After one more insurance run in the bottom of the eighth by the Cardinals, the score stood for the rest of the ball game with Lamar claiming game one of the doubleheader, 5-1.
Game 2: Lamar 3, Pacific 0
The Pacific bats could not solve Lamar starter Hunter Hesseltine, who threw 7.0 shutout innings with seven strikeouts. All four Tiger hits were of the single variety.
Lamar scored two runs in the bottom of the opening frame on five singles to take a 2-0 lead.
One more run was produced by the home team in the bottom of the fifth as a Cardinal scored on a wild pitch to ultimately set up the final score, 3-0.
Pacific returns home and will face Sacramento State at 5 pm on Wednesday at Klein Family Field.
