Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

No. 17 Pacific Splits at Day One of Pomona-Pitzer Convergence

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Pacific women's water polo split the first day at the Pomona-Pitzer Convergence as it came up short against No. 22 LIU before clinching a victory against Mount St. Mary's on Friday at Haldeman Pool.

The Tigers (9-5, 0-1 GCC) dropped a 16-13 overtime contest to the Sharks (11-3, 0-0 MAAC) before getting back in the win column with a 13-9 victory against the Mountaineers (9-6, 0-0 MAAC).

"Against all the difficulties the team has been experiencing recently, we dominated and decided the game in the first half," sophomore Dora Alaksza said. "The bench helped keep up the energy level and we pushed the tempo throughout the game. The team needs to find itself again. Focusing on one game at a time."

Game 1: No. 22 LIU 16, No. 17 Pacific 13 (OT)
Pacific was down 5-2 in the first period. Freshman Ella Cowan and junior Lucia Sarminsakci combined for the Tigers' next three goals to bring the team within one with 3:23 left in the second period, 6-5. The Sharks registered one more goal to take a 7-5 lead at halftime.

Both teams traded back and forth goals at the start of the third. Junior Natasha Dykman scored at the 2:53 mark, igniting a 5-0 run that extended into the fourth period. Pacific had the 12-9 lead as a result.

LIU responded with three unanswered goals to tie the game at 12-all. Sarimsacki broke the tie with her second goal of the contest at 1:18 before the Sharks tied it again 11 seconds later. Dykman had a chance to notch the winning goal for the Tigers on a penalty, but it was denied by the opponent's goalkeeper Martina Giannoni.

In overtime, Pacific was held scoreless while LIU tallied three goals to bring the game to its final score.

Cowan led the way with a season-high three goals. Dykman, Futorian, Sarimsakci and sophomore Noemi Alaksza recorded two apiece. Freshman goalkeeper Maja Lizy Dulic collected 12 saves.

Game 2: No. 17 Pacific 13, Mount St. Mary's 9
Dora Alaksza got Pacific going with the first two goals of the game. The Tigers dominated the Mountaineers 11-5 in the first half, 7-3 in the first period. Dora Alaksza matched her career-high six goals during the time frame.

Pacific was held scoreless in the third period while Mount St. Mary's registered three goals to make it an 11-8 game.

Freshman Anna Crum notched the first goal of her career at the 6:53 mark in the fourth period to end the Tigers' scoring drought. Sophomore Amaya Leiby found the back of the net with under four minutes to go which kept Pacific up for good.

In addition to Dora Alaksza's six goals, Dykman, Leiby and junior Addison McGowan registered two apiece.

"The game was competitive for our entire roster and allowed us to gain trust in our teammates and refocus our team goals," head coach Candice Vorbeck said. "We're looking forward to being back tomorrow."

Up next, Pacific plays day two of the Pomona-Pitzer Convergence against DIII No. 6 La Verne at 8 a.m. and No. 4 USC at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday.
