Saint Mary's Escapes Pacific in Overtime after Smith's Buzzer Beater in Regulation

STOCKTON, Calif. – A game tying three-pointer by graduate Liz Smith as time expired in regulation sent the game to overtime, but Saint Mary's was able to finish on top 80-78 on Saturday at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

Smith registered a career-high 30 points and senior Anaya James tallied her 500th career assist for the Tigers (5-8, 1-2 WCC). Smith's buzzer beater came on an inbounds play when the Tigers had the ball near midcourt down by three with 0.8 seconds remaining.

Entering the contest, Pacific had not had a player go for 30 or more points in a game since Sam Ashby against UNLV in 2021. Smith's 30 came on 8-for-19 shooting including 4-for-11 from beyond the arc and a season-high 9-for-10 free throws. The graduate also finished her night one rebound shy of tying her career-high with eight on the afternoon.

In surpassing the 500-career assist mark, James became just the second Tiger in program history to achieve that feat. Coincidentally assist number 500 came on the Smith buzzer-beater that sent the contest to overtime. James also contributed 17 points on an efficient 7-for-10 shooting and 3-for-4 three-point shooting.

Senior Elizabeth Elliott paced all rebounders in the game with a season-high 12 boards. In doing so, Elliott jumped up two spots on the career rebound leader board to sit 12th all-time with 617 assists. In 20 more rebounds she will pass former Tiger Sonya Monroe (1977-81) for 11th place.

Sophomore Marina Radocaj played a critical role in the Tiger effort, garnering a season-high 28:15 minutes of action and produced a final line of six points, five rebounds and two steals. Her rebounding effort matches her career-high set earlier this season at Washington.

Closing out 2024 Pacific remains at home to face the Washington State Cougars in the Alex G. Spanos Center for the first time since 1983 on Monday. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
