NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Pacific women's basketball program forced 29 turnovers and turned in an efficient offensive performance to pull off the 60-50 win over Yale on Sunday from the John J. Lee Amphitheater.
Four of five starters recorded multiple steals in the contest, led by senior
Anaya James' five and graduate
Liz Smith's three. The guard duo was then able to translate those steals into fast break opportunities as Pacific (3-3) outscored Yale (1-5) 23-2 in fast break points and 25-8 in points off turnovers. The five steals James recorded put her at 21 on the season, making her the first player in the West Coast Conference to reach that milestone this season.
As a team, Pacific holds two of the top five spots in the WCC for single-game steals and the most against a D-I opponent this season.
In addition to her defensive efforts, James led all players with eight assists and tied the team-lead six rebounds.
Often on the receiving end of a James pass were Smith and senior
Elizabeth Elliott, both of whom finished the game scoring in double figures. Smith led Pacific with 16 points on 4-for-10 shooting, a three-pointer, and a season-high seven free throws. The graduate has had a knack for getting to the charity stripe this past week, shooting a total of 12-for-14 from the line against Columbia and Yale combined.
Elliott's final line was 15 points on 7-for-11 shooting, meaning the Tigers are 3-0 when she shoots 60% or better from the floor.
Pacific's team shooting percentage was 46% (23-for-50) and are 3-0 in games this season in which it shoots 40% or better.
The Tigers remain on the road for their next two contests, taking part in the Big Easy Classic in New Orleans, Louisiana on Nov. 29-30. Pacific will first face Lamar, a school it has not seen since 2018, and then Houston, the first meeting with the Cougars since 1982.
