NEW YORK – Pacific women's basketball visits Levien Gymnasium to face Columbia on Wednesday at 4 p.m., and then heads to the John J. Lee Amphitheater to take on Yale on Sunday at 9 a.m., marking the first time the program has gone on the road to face an Ivy League institution.
Pacific (2-2) is 2-2 all-time against the Ivy League, but three of those meetings have come inside the Alex G. Spanos Center and the other on a neutral court. The Tigers split their two matches last season against Columbia (3-1) and Yale (1-3), defeating the latter but falling to the former.
In last season's meeting with Columbia, the team suffered a setback after the Lions came out and shot 12-for-19 in the opening quarter to amass a 16-point lead Pacific was ultimately unable to overcome. The Tigers were held to a season low 25 rebounds in the contest but have yet to grab fewer than 30 in a game this season.
Pacific's match up with Yale last season saw the Tigers pull out victory on the back of a 25-13 fourth quarter that saw Pacific hold the Bulldogs to 4-for-17 from the field while the Tigers shot 8-for-13 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Senior
Anaya James led all scorers with 20 in that contest while senior
Elizabeth Elliott led all rebounders with 11 and collected a double-double.
Despite the dominant fourth quarter showing from the Tigers, the game was tightly contested as the lead changed hands 11 times and was tied up six more times.
One stat to watch as the young season unfolds is James' steals. Through four games the senior guard has 15 steals, which makes her not only the conference leader in steals (and the only WCC player with more than 10) but is also on pace for 112 steals this season. If she were to do that, she would become just the second Tiger in program history to collect more than 100 steals in a season and set the program record for single season steals – currently held by Sheri Bates (104 steals during the 1981-82 season).
Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
