Defensive Effort Powers Pacific Past Saint Mary’s

STOCKTON, Calif. – Pacific women's basketball made a huge presence on defense as it cruised past Saint Mary's by a score of 60-45 on Thursday at Alex G. Spanos Center.

The Tigers limited the Gaels to just .250 (13-52) from the field. The lowest percentage Pacific has held its opponents to this season.

Elliott finished the contest with 19 points and five rebounds. The Inglewood, Calif. native scored 13 of her points during the fourth quarter. Graduate student Cecilia Holmberg registered 15 points and four rebounds.

"I've been just trying to take everything from my teammates and from my coaches," Elliott said. "You know stay in the game, stay engaged. Always when I can. Even if it's not through scoring. My teammates did a good job of telling me 'Hey you got this, you got this. We've seen this defense before. You've got it.' I was able to kind of push through and increase my intensity and increase my intention span. It helped a lot down the stretch."

The game was tied at 12-all at the end of the first quarter. Pacific went off in the second outscoring Saint Mary's 20-7 which put them up 30-17 at halftime.

The Gaels went on a 9-0 run in the third quarter to cut the Tigers' lead to four, 30-26. With under five minutes left, junior Anaya James drained back-to-back three-pointers while graduate student Madelene Ennis notched a layup and free throw to keep Pacific up by 10. Despite the Gaels having a 15-9 advantage in the third, the score was 39-32 in favor of the Tigers.

The chemistry of Elliott and Holmberg came into play at the start of the fourth quarter. The pair combined for 18 points to give Pacific its largest lead of the game, 57-39. The Tigers would never look back the rest of the contest as they held the Gaels to just .182 (2-11) from the field.

Pacific shot .436 (24-55) overall and .571 (8-14) from the three-point line. The Tigers outscored the Gaels 30-16 in the paint and had 16 points off 23 turnovers.

"I think our tempo was really off in that third quarter," head coach Bradley Davis said. "Fortunately, we got it back. We saw some opportunities to get our post players involved early in transition."

Pacific is on the road for the next three games beginning with Portland at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
