STOCKTON, Calif.— Pacific men's soccer (3-2-2) tied San Jose State (1-2-3), 1-1, at Knoles Field on Wednesday.
The Spartans out shot the Tigers 7-2 in the first 27 minutes. But Pacific rallied by taking the next four.
In the 39th minute, fifth year
Avery Whipple passed the ball off a corner kick to
Samuel Villalta who headed it to fifth year
Derick Roque for the 1-0 lead. It was the fifth goal of the season for the South Gate, Calif., native.
San Jose State scored the equalizer in the 71st minute as Anthony Guzman found Riccardo Scarafia who dribbled the ball and shot it left to make it a 1-1 game.
Both teams notched three shots each in the final minutes. Pacific had two back-to-back chances shots on target but were saved by Spartans goalkeeper David Sweeney.
"Anytime San Jose and Pacific play, you know there's going to be good soccer," said head coach
Adam Reeves. "I thought it was a very well-played soccer match. We got a little chippy there at the end, but that's part of two competitive teams competing hard against each other. It's disappointing to go up 1-0 and concede late midway through the second half and not pull out the win. We talk about how important it is to score first and being able to be good defensively and keep the shutout. I'm looking forward to getting these guys regenerated. Hopefully, going to Utah and getting a victory."
Both teams had 13 shots apiece, with the Tigers taking the 6-4 edge in net. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper
Brian Lanier grabbed three saves on the night.
Up next, Pacific travels to Orem to take on Utah Valley at 6:30 p.m. PT/7:30 p.m. MT on Saturday.
