STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific women's soccer team (0-0-1) opened the season with a high-scoring, 4-4 draw against UC San Diego (0-0-1). The Tigers scored three first-half goals before the Tritons stormed back with two goals in the last five minutes to force the draw.
"They had a chance to regroup," Co-Head Coach
J.J. Wozniak said. "They had a chance at halftime to regroup and change direction. We had some moments to separate even more and were not able to finish it."
Four separate Tigers scored in the contest. Sophomores
Haley Johnson and
Alexis Pashales joined fifth-year seniors
Lauren Frohan and
Jaida Nyby with goals. Four separate Tigers recorded assists. Pashales and Frohan, junior
Aniela Jensen, and senior
Taylor Curtis all recorded assists.
In goal, freshman
Libby Davy recorded three saves on seven shots faced.
"It is great that we are getting shots on goal, but we have to find opportunities to put games away," said Co-Head Coach
Danesha Adams. "We had a chance to go up 4-0 and did not do it, which cost us. We are going to keep working,"
Pashales started the scoring for the Tigers with a beautiful goal in the fifth minute off a corner kick from Jensen. Just over ten minutes later, Pashales was back in action, connecting with Frohan on a pass that the fifth-year senior promptly buried in the back of the net.
After coming off the bench in the 33rd minute, Nyby received a through pass from Curtis, and after making multiple moves to get past the defense, she found the top left of the goal to put Pacific up 3-0 heading into the half.
Coming out of the half, the two teams continued to battle; despite being down by three, UCSD never stopped attacking, scoring its first goal in the 56th minute, sneaking the ball into the lower left corner to make it a 3-1 Pacific lead. The Tigers followed up with two shots on goal within three minutes of the score but were turned away by the Triton's keeper, who ended the night with nine saves.
UCSD added a second goal in the 77th minute to make it a one-goal game before Pacific responded less than a minute later, with Johnson receiving a pass from Frohan and firing a missile past the keeper to extend the lead to two for the Tigers.
The two teams continued to battle as the Tritons continued to pressure. UCSD broke through the Pacific defense twice in the final five minutes, scoring in the 86th and 88th minutes to bring the game to 4-4. A Davy save in the 90th minute kept the game tied for the Tigers.
Pacific is back in action at 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 20, at Knoles Field against Eastern Washington.
