Las Vegas, Nev. - The Pacific women's tennis team (1-0) took on Youngstown State Friday morning and came away with a 5-2 victory to start their 2023 spring season. Seniors Klara Kosan and Danielle Zamora pulled away with doubles wins and crucial singles points.
"Solid start to the season for us today," said Head Coach Mike Erwin. "Karina and Mia picked up decisive wins, which left us with Danielle and Klara on the court to decide the match. Both won. I like our chances when it comes down to those two seniors".
Pacific came away with the doubles point today, led by the seniors. On court #1, Kosan and sophomore MiaAngelina Ruja defeated Youngstown State 6-4. On court #3, Zamora and sophomore Karina Chao defeated YSU 7-6. The last doubles match to finish was court #2, with a very intense match between sophomores Tomi Main and Alexis Sam and YSU that they eventually dropped 7-6.
The Tigers continued to excel in the singles match taking four out of six matches. Ruja, Kosan, Chao, and Zamora all came out victorious. Kosan went to three sets and ultimately defeated her opponent 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. The last singles point came down to Zamora, who dropped the first set, but bounced back and won the contest 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
They (Zamora and Kosan) have hung in there through the ups and downs of their careers," Erwin said. "What stood out down the stretch today was their heart and experience."
The Tigers are back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 4th, at 10 a.m. against a tough UNLV team.
