Erwin HS 2020-21

Mike Erwin

Mike Erwin enters his sixth season as the Pacific head coach, including one interim year, and his seventh on the Stockton campus. He was named head coach on June 7, 2018 after serving as interim head coached for the Spring 2018 season. Erwin was originally named to the Pacific women's tennis staff as an assistant in February 2017.

The 2022-23 season saw the team win seven matches, including two WCC contests, finishing 7-12 and 2-7, with conference wins over Santa Clara and Portland. Klara Kosan earned Second-Team All-WCC for singles play for the third year. She and sophomore Karina Chao were named Second-Team All-WCC in doubles play.

The 2022 season was the biggest jump for the program under Erwin, compiling a 10-10 overall record which was the best record for the program since 2005. The Tigers picked up back-to-back wins over Gonzaga and Portland late in the season to finish the season with a 2-5 conference record.  Kosan was named to the Second-Team All-WCC in singles play for the second time in her career.

With no Fall 2020 season the Tigers only competed in the spring of 2021. Erwin guided the team to a 4-12 season. Klara Kosan was named to the SEcond-Team All-WCC for singles play as a freshman.

In the 2020 spring the team was off to a strong start, winning four of their first five matches under Erwin. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic ending the season the Tigers were 4-3.

In his first season as the head coach, Erwin led the team to a 4-14 spring record with his first win coming at home against Louisiana College. The Tigers got a win over WCC rival Santa Clara. Dohee Lee was named to the All-WCC singles team.

Erwin has over 20 years experience working in the tennis industry, from youth organizations to professional tennis. He has been the tournament director for multiple professional tennis events held at Pacific's Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center, including the Stockton Men’s $100,000 ATP Challenger and Stockton Women’s $60,000 Challenger. Erwin coached Pacific’s Anneroos Nederstigt in the summer of 2017 to her first professional ranking points in the Stockton Women’s $60,000 Challenger.

Originally from Dayton, Ohio, Erwin has spent time as a junior development coach, guiding players to various state and national championships, including champions in the Winter National, Orange Bowl, Easter Bowl, and National Clay Court tournaments along with a US Open junior finalist and multiple NCAA qualifiers. Under Erwin's leadership, players have been awarded millions of dollars in college scholarships and several have gone on to play professional tennis.

Erwin also has professional affiliations with the USTA, serving as the vice chair of the USTA Northern California Coaches Commissions as well as holding a membership with the USTA Northern California Junior Tennis Council. He was awarded the Volunteer of the Year award in 2014 for his work with USTA NorCal.

Erwin has previously served as assistant tennis coach at Wright State in Dayton, Ohio. Collegiately, he played on Sinclair College’s nationally-ranked men’s tennis team.
