Pacific Women's Basketball Finishes Regular Season with Win over Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. – The Pacific women's basketball team (13-16, 8-10) wrapped up the regular season with a dominating 68-53 win over Saint Mary's (12-17, 6-11).

Senior Sam Ashby led the way, scoring 20 points and grabbing three steals. Sophomore Anaya James added 19 points off the bench, going a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line and dishing out three assists. Juniors Liz Smith and Cecilia Holmberg each had seven rebounds and Smith played a team-high 39 minutes.

It was not a dominant start for the Tigers, as the Gaels stuck with the Tigers for most of the quarter. Smith and James started hot, each scoring five points in the quarter. An 8-5 run from the Gaels to close the quarter cut the Tiger's lead to just two heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter was the game's lowest scoring, with Pacific putting up just six points but holding the Gaels to just 11. The Gaels took their first lead with 5:17 left in the half and held the Tigers scoreless for the final 4:06 of the half, taking a three-point lead into the locker room at halftime.

Pacific retook the lead in the third quarter, but it took the final basket of the quarter, a three from James, to put the Tigers back in front. Pacific went a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc in the quarter to help take a one-point advantage into the final quarter.

Ashby took over in the fourth quarter, scoring 11 points, including a three with 6:42 to go to put Pacific up by 14, its largest lead of the game up to that point. The Tigers scored 27 points in the quarter to secure the win and put the team in an ideal spot for a bye in the WCC tournament.

With Portland and BYU still to play on Monday, Pacific sits at sixth in the standings and would play the winner of the #7 vs. #10 game in the WCC Tournament.
