STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific volleyball team (15-9, 7-5 WCC) took the visiting San Diego Toreros (14-9, 10-3 WCC) to five sets on Saturday afternoon at the Alex G. Spanos Center. Forcing a final set after edging out San Diego in the fourth, the Tigers fell 3-2 at home (25-21, 17-25, 16-25, 25-23, 4-15).
The Tigers opened the day behind four service aces and 13 kills in the first set, while San Diego struggled to create momentum, hitting .083. The Toreros bounced back in the second hitting .438 and collecting 15 kills.
While the hitting cooled in the third and the Tigers put up a fight to keep the score close, three service aces and three blocks from the Toreros forced the Tigers down 2-1 entering the fourth set.
Pacific earned the edge over San Diego in the fourth set to force a fifth after San Diego's woes returned. Much like before, the Toreros rebounded hitting .333 through the final set and the Tigers fell at home.
Leading the charge for the Tigers was senior
Alexa Edwards, who recorded 18 kills,15 digs and one ace on the day. Aiding her was junior
Jenna Heller, who led both teams with her 40 assists, while adding 12 digs. Senior
Darina Kumanova notched 11 kills and nine digs, while capturing one of the five Tiger aces of the afternoon.
Freshman
Zoe Morales led the team with 16 digs, five assists, and an ace. Senior
Ramonni Cook and sophomore
Emily Van Groningen combined for 12 kills, while Van Groningen hit a team leading .278 on 18 attempts and one error.
Pacific heads out on the road for a Pacific Northwest trip, visiting both Portland and Gonzaga next week. The Tigers return to the Alex G. Spanos Center on Thursday, Nov. 16 as they host conference-leading Pepperdine for senior night.
