Men's Basketball Extends Winning Streak, Defeats Pepperdine on the Road

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pacific men's basketball team extended its winning streak Saturday evening, defeating Pepperdine, 80-75, at the Firestone Fieldhouse.

"We knew we had to get multiple stops at the end," Head Coach Leonard Perry said after the game. "We got those stops, we executed, and everyone contributed."

Judson Martindale led the Tigers (10-9, 3-1) throughout the contest, scoring a season-high 19 points. Reaching double figures for the second time this season, Martindale shot 70 percent (seven-for-10) from the field and was lethal from beyond the arc, knocking down three of his five attempts from distance. The sophomore from Sudbury, Mass., nearly recorded his first career double-double as he led the team with eight rebounds.

Earning his fourth-straight start, Moe Odum played a crucial role throughout the game, tallying a career-high 11 points in 18 minutes of work. Shooting 44.4 percent (four-for-nine) from the field, Odum scored or assisted on nine of the team's final 11 points to help erase a late deficit. The freshman from Bronx, N.Y., also propelled the team defensively, tallying a team-high two steals and securing four rebounds.

"I love his composure," Perry said about Odum. "He comes from New York City, so nothing seems to rattle him."

Keylan Boone, the third starter to reach double figures, scored 10 points, including two crucial free throws to secure the win late in the game.

Bench support played a role in the winning efforts as the Tigers outscored the Waves (7-10, 0-3), 24-9. Tyler Beard led the second unit, scoring 11 points off the bench while shooting 66.6 percent (two-for-three) from the three-point line.

In a back-and-forth first half, the Tigers used multiple runs to gain a healthy advantage at the 5:49 mark. Pushing the lead to eight, 32-24, on a Greg Outlaw three-point basket, the Tigers' lead began to slip away as the Waves used a 13-5 run to tie the game at 37 with 38 seconds left in the half. On the Tigers' final possession of the opening period, Martindale drained a three-pointer to give the team a three-point lead, 40-37, heading into the halftime break.

Nine lead changes occurred during the final 20 minutes of play as neither team held a lead of more than five points. Trailing by five, 72-67, with 5:33 left in the game, the Tigers chipped away at the deficit, going on a 13-3 run to secure the win while forcing the Waves into multiple turnovers.

Pacific returns to action at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, as it returns home to face off against Santa Clara at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
