STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific women's basketball team (7–14, 2–8) led early against San Diego (11–10, 5–5), but the Toreros came back late, scoring 40 points in the second half to leave the Alex G. Spanos Center with a 74-67 win.
On the official National Day of Australia, redshirt junior
Rosie Schweizer and senior
Sam Ashby led the Tigers in multiple categories. The Canberra, Australia native, Schweizer, led the Tigers in rebounds with 13 and was tied for the team lead in points scored with 15 for in her first career double-double. Ashby, from Perth, Australia, led the Tigers in assists with five and steals with three. Junior
Cecilia Holmberg added 14 points, while junior
Liz Smith kept pace with Schweizer in scoring, putting up 15 points.
The two teams stayed neck and neck in the first quarter, as junior
Madelene Ennis scored the first two baskets for the Tigers. Neither team could take more than a four-point lead in the quarter as the Tigers scored six straight to end the quarter by two.
The second quarter mirrored the first for the two teams. Both squads traded leads early in the quarter before San Diego built a nine-point lead with 2:36 left before Pacific scored eight straight points to make it a one-point Toreros lead heading into halftime.
The game stayed close in the third quarter, with neither side able to grab a commanding lead. A layup from sophomore
Elizabeth Elliott tied the game at 49 with 1:36 left to go in the quarter. A layup at the buzzer from the Toreros made the lead three over the Tigers heading into the final frame.
The fourth quarter was the only time a team went over 20 points in a quarter, as San Diego scored 22. Pacific played solid defense down the stretch, but despite the Toreros turning the ball over multiple times in the game's final two minutes, the Tiger's comeback attempt ran out of time, falling 74-67.
The Tigers host BYU for the final time as a conference matchup at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28.
