SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Pacific men's soccer team (1-7-1) finished the non-conference schedule against San Jose State (3-3-1). The Spartans scored twice in the second half to take the 2-0 win.
Quinlan Graham, Kai Sullivan and Samuel Villalta all put shots on the net for the Tigers. Three of the Tiger's four shots were on goal. Brian Lanier set a career-high in saves in his second straight start with eight.
The Tiger's attack pushed the San Jose State back line early, putting a shot on goal and being awarded five corners while keeping the Spartans without a corner kick. The Spartans fired early and often, taking eight shots in the first half.
San Jose State scored 11 seconds into the second half to take the lead. Lanier made seven saves in the second half to keep the Tigers in the game. The Tigers held San Jose State without a corner during the game. Sullivan put a shot on the net in the 89th minute but could not get it past the goalkeeper.
"Considering the circumstances, I thought the first half was ok," said Head Coach Adam Reeves. "It was played at the tempo we wanted coming off a game 48 hours prior. There weren't many chances on either side. Conceding a goal so early in the second half, especially with how it happened, was extremely deflating for the group. At that point, you have to start chasing the game and leaving yourself exposed a bit defensively, and ultimately we got punished for it. It's not the start to the season we expected, but now we have a nice break to hopefully reintroduce some of the injured players and prepare for a very tough WCC schedule."
The Tigers start conference play next weekend, hosting Santa Clara October 1 at 7 p.m.
