Tigers Take Sting out of Hornets in 4-2 Win

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Tigers played for the first time at home this season, and the team showed out in front of a packed house. Scoring early and often, the Tigers took the first win of the season, 4-2 over Sacramento State.

Jenae Packard, Reid Morrison, Lauren Frohan and Alexis Pashales scored for the Tigers in the win. In net, Brenna Crump had two saves as the Tiger defense kept the Sacramento State offense at bay.

Sacramento State got the scoring started right away. The Hornets buried the shot in the back of the net off a free kick to take an early lead in the ninth minute. The Tigers struck back minutes later as Packard took a pass from Abigail Wolf on a fast break and evened the game at one in the 20th minute. Wolf had multiple deep runs into the Hornet's zone and constantly was pressuring the Hornet's defense.

"We kind of got shocked by that first goal," said Co-Head Coaches Danesha Adams and J.J. Wozniak. "After that, we found some rhythm and put some goals in the back of the net."

Just minutes later, Morrison gave the Tigers the lead for good, as her header from a Packard pass found the net for Morrison's first goal with the Tigers. Pashales scored her first collegiate goal in the 37th minute as Anaya Shelton found Aly Milford running down the left side, and Milford crossed the ball into the middle, where Pashales rocked it into the net for what would be the game-winning goal.

A strong tackle from the Tigers led to a penalty shot for the Hornets, which brought the score to 3-2 coming out of the half. Despite the one-goal lead, the Tigers did not let up, as Frohan received a rebounded shot and put it in the back of the net to put the lead back to two for the Tigers.

"To go down a goal and then to be up 3-1 at the half when we felt that we could have been better on our part," said Adams and Wozniak. "Credit to the players, and we scored some quality goals tonight. We had a chat at halftime and got better in the second half. To limit them to one shot in the second half and to have 23 players see the field that is something we are thrilled with. Overall, a good night. We are happy to get the first win and appreciate everyone coming out and supporting."

The Tigers are on the road next, taking on UC Davis on Thursday before returning home on Sunday, Aug. 28, to host Oregon State.
