Shelton and Saravia Score in Tigers Opener

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Tigers started the season with a 2-2 tie as Anaya Shelton and Laila Saravia scored in the Tigers' opener.

Shelton quickly showed why she scored 132 goals in high school as she buried a pass from Hana Rosenblatt in the back of the net in the 12th minute. The Tigers stayed on attack for most of the first half, challenging the Long Beach State defense early and often, leading to five corner kicks in the first half. The Beach scored in the 38th minute to tie the game at one heading into the half.

The Tigers wasted no time in the second half as Saravia scored in the 48th minute to take the lead right back for Pacific. Rosenblatt recorded her second assist of the game as she set Saravia up perfectly to score. Ryanne Molenaar and Jaida Nyby also had shots on the net that Long Beach State saved. The two teams continued to battle as the Beach scored in the 66th minute to tie the game at two.

Brenna Crump stayed busy in goal, saving eight shots from the Beach attack. Crump made several spectacular saves, leaping into the air to redirect the ball away from the net and was a crucial factor in the result of the match.

Rosenblatt doubled her career assist count with two in the game. Jenae Packard was credited with an assist on the first goal as her pass to Rosenblatt helped set up the goal.

The back line for the Tigers played nearly the entire game as the chemistry for the season began to build for one of the best units in the WCC last season.

"What an opening night," said Co-Head Coaches Danesha Adams and J.J. Wozniak. "Despite the draw, we feel good with how our group played. For the first match of the season, against a well-coached, quality opponent on the road, our players went to work and performed at a high level. To go up 1-0 and 2-1 and to wind up tying is frustrating for sure, but our players will grow from this experience tonight. We have already turned our attention to our home opener on Sunday against Sacramento State. We look forward to seeing everyone at Knoles to support this fantastic Tigers team!"

The Tigers are at Knoles Field on Sunday for the 2022 home opener, where they will take on Sacramento State. There will be a schedule poster giveaway before the start of the game.
