Softball Drops West Coast Conference Doubleheader to BYU

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific softball team, competing in its final series of the season, dropped a West Coast Conference doubleheader to BYU Friday afternoon at Bill Simoni Field.

BYU 3, Pacific 0

After two scoreless innings, the Tigers (12-36, 2-11) fell behind in the top half of the third inning as a solo home run by HannahJo Peterson put the Cougars (37-10, 9-2) up 1-0. The Cougars tallied another home run later in the game, a two-run shot in the fifth inning by Taylei Williams to solidify the victory.

The Tigers' pitching staff put together a solid performance against one of the conference's best teams despite the loss. Amiyah Aponte earned the start and pitched five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. The sophomore from Riverside, Calif., recorded her ninth game of at least two strikeouts as she tallied three strikeouts in the first game of the doubleheader. Hannah Glad finished the game's final innings, allowing only one hit in two innings pitched.

BYU 10, Pacific 0

With a depleted rotation, Glad earned the start in the circle for the nightcap, her eighth of the season. Glad pitched well despite allowing four runs on six hits in three innings of work. The freshman from Camarillo, Calif., recorded a perfect fielding percentage as she tallied three assists, increasing her season total to 13.

The Tigers had a much-improved hitting performance in the second game of the doubleheader, as the team tallied six hits. Carly Lucchetti and Reagan Hamilton led the charge and were the lone members of the team to record a multi-hit game. Lucchetti showed off her speed in the first inning of play, beating out a throw from the shortstop, Marissa Chavez, for an infield single and followed with another single in her next at-bat.

Hamilton also contributed to the Tigers' offensive production in the contest as she broke her six-game hitless streak. The sophomore from Taft, Calif., tallied two singles for her first multi-hit game since going two-for-four against Marist on March 19.

"I thought we played tough today," Head Coach Brian Kolze stated regarding the team's effort. "They tried so hard, but it got away from them late, especially in the second game." "The execution didn't happen against a good team, and they took advantage of it."

Pacific returns to action on Saturday, May 7, as the Tigers wrap up the 2022 season with a final game against BYU at Bill Simoni Field.
