Tigers Win Quarterfinal to Advance in GCC Championship

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The #16 Pacific Women's Water Polo Team (13-10, 6-1) is advancing to the semifinals of the GCC Championship Tournament after beating Concordia-Irvine 14-8 in the quarterfinal.

"I think overall, we came out and did 90 percent of what we wanted to do," said Head Coach James Graham. "I'm a little concerned about the number of offensive fouls and exclusions in that game, so we will have to clean up a few details there. But overall, we were able to utilize our full bench, everyone was able to contribute, and we were able to keep our players fresh. We were able to execute and get good looks on offense in six on six and the powerplays, and overall, I thought our pressing defense was pretty stifling at times, so I was pretty happy with that."

The Tigers capitalized on the powerplays they were presented that game, scoring on eight of their nine powerplays accounting for 57 percent of their total goals.

Senior Co-Captain Toula Falvey led the scoring for the Tigers with six goals in the game. Freshman Hila Futorian had two for the Tigers. Graduate student Co-Captain Mariana Duarte had one in the game. Senior Ana Martinez do Amaral, senior Lucy Davis, freshman Ilyana Zlobinsky, freshman Addison McGowan and freshman Szamira Koppány each scored one goal for the Tigers.

"It was a great team win," said Falvey. "With this being my last GCC's I went in it with a mentality that I want to win this championship so badly and want to leave a legacy at Pacific Water Polo. My teammates set me up with great passes today, which allowed me to score some goals. We played Pacific water polo today, and we'll keep doing so moving forward."

Davis led the team in assists, credited with four. Senior Brianna Utas, senior Emma Myall, Futorian and McGowan each had one.

Utas led the Tigers in steals with three. Falvey, Myall, sophomore Annikah Lillie, do Amaral and Futorian each had one steal in the game.

"I think it's a good start to the weekend," said Graham. "We'll have to build on it from here. It will take another level to be successful tomorrow, and it'll take another level on the next day to win the championship. We know that, and we're ready to step it up."

"We definitely proved ourselves from the last time we played Concordia," said Falvey. "It was a much better game and outcome. It was great to see so many girls get minutes today and contribute to the win. We are taking this tournament one game at a time and are excited to play LMU tomorrow and continue to play our game."

The Tigers take on No. 3 seed LMU in the semifinal game tomorrow at 2 p.m.
