Softball Tops Colgate, Falls to Incarnate Word at the Lopes Up Classic

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The Pacific softball team earned a split against Colgate and Incarnate Word Friday morning as the Tigers competed in the Lopes Up Classic at Grand Canyon University.

Pacific 4, Colgate 3

Hannah Glad earned the start in the circle for the Tigers (3-7) and tallied her best outing of the season, allowing just one earned run in a career-high seven innings. Glad, who achieved her first collegiate win, struck out two batters and kept the game close while the Tigers clawed back into the game.

The Raiders (6-5) scored two early runs in the top half of the first inning, but the Tigers answered and cut the deficit in half shortly after. In the bottom half of the first inning, Emily Budelli worked a leadoff walk and quickly moved into scoring possession on a passed ball. Budelli would later score on a Reagan Hamilton RBI sacrifice flyout to trim the Raiders' lead to 2-1.

Trailing 3-1, after the Raiders added another run in the third inning, the Tigers bounced back in the bottom half of the fourth inning as Hamilton powered a solo home run over the left-field fence to cut the lead to 3-2. Hamilton, who tallied her first collegiate home run, recorded her second multi-RBI game of the season and is second on the team with six RBI.

Pacific completed the comeback in the bottom half of the sixth inning, scoring two runs to take its first lead of the game. Nina Davis and Carly Lucchetti recorded back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Nikki Enriquez, who pinch ran for Davis, and Lucchetti later scored to give the Tigers a 4-3 advantage.

Glad worked a perfect seventh inning in the circle to solidify the win for the Tigers.

"Hannah [Glad] pitched a tremendous game," Head Coach Brian Kolze stated after the win. "We had some timely hitting and execution including Reagan's [Hamilton] first collegiate home run."

Incarnate Word 4, Pacific 2 (eight innings)

Like the first game of the day, the Tigers faced an early deficit as the Cardinals (4-8) jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead. The Tigers, however, rallied, scoring one run in the second and third innings to tie the game at two.

In the second inning, Fabian, who recorded two hits on the day, doubled to left-center field, scoring Delaney Scully to cut the lead to 2-1. The Tigers tied the game shortly after as Natalie Linker reached on an error to begin the bottom of the third inning. Linker scored later in the inning on a Rian Dirmeyer RBI single, tying the game at two.

In the eighth inning, the tie was broken as the Cardinals tallied two runs to pull ahead. The Tigers failed to score in the bottom half of the eighth inning as the Cardinals came out with the victory.

"Tough game to lose," Kolze said after the second game. "We had opportunities that we couldn't capitalize on and that put us into extra innings." "We had our chances but we didn't get it done."

Pacific returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 26, as the Tigers take on Colorado State and Grand Canyon in the Lopes Up Classic.
