Volleyball Sweeps San Francisco in Regular Season Finale

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Pacific volleyball team knocked off San Francisco in three straight sets, 25-23, 25-19, 25-12, to finish tied for fifth in the 10-team West Coast Conference in the final regular-season match on Tuesday evening.

"It was a great team effort tonight," said Head Coach Greg Gibbons. "I thought we had a lot of fight. By finishing in the top half of the conference, we helped our chances of earning a postseason bid. I'm proud of this team and its grit."

Senior Biamba Kabengele, junior Alexa Edwards, and junior Darina Kumanova led the Tigers (16-13, 8-10) offensively, combining for 32 of the team's 41 kills. Kabengele led the way with 13 kills in 30 total attempts. Kumanova had 10 kills, and Edwards added nine.

Edwards (4th) and Kabengele (9th) are ranked in the top 10 in the WCC in kills per set. Kumanova, who ranks 22nd in kills, leads the WCC in service aces with 47, including one in this match. Edwards and Kabengele both had a team-best three service aces.

Sophomore setter Jenna Heller had 25 assists and a team-best 15 digs. Edwards also had 13 digs.

In the opening set, the Tigers roared out of the gate on the road, jumping out to a 9-2 start over the Dons (14-15, 7-11), as Kabengele had two kills and two aces in the run. The Dons got back in the game and took their only lead of the set at 21-20. Pacific won five of the last seven points, led by two kills again by Kabengele.

The Tigers also started quickly in the second set, jumping up 4-0. Pacific, which only lost the lead twice in the set, had a key 5-0 run late in the set, pushing the lead out to 22-14. Kumanova had two kills in that key run, while Kabengele added a third. The Tigers won the second, 25-19.

Pacific opened the third set in a similar fashion, jumping to a 4-0 lead behind two Kabengele kills, one from freshman Logan Blutreich and a service ace from Edwards. The Dons pulled to within two, but Pacific never trailed in the set, winning 25-12.

The win avenged a five-set loss to the Dons on October 22 on the Pacific campus. Pacific finished the WCC season tied with Santa Clara for fifth in the conference. The Broncos beat Saint Mary's on Tuesday, 3-1. A National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) participant a year ago, Pacific will wait for postseason bids to be announced on November 27.
