STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific women's soccer team (5-1-7, 0-1-1) battled for 90 against a strong Saint Mary's team (4-2-5, 0-0-2) Wednesday night and came out with a final score of 0-0, its seventh draw of the season, first of the conference.
"We have to put the ball in the back of the net. We've had a lot of ties this year, and we've just got to find ways to win games," said Co-Head Coach Danesha Adams. "It's hard to win, but we've got to find ways to win games. We dominated in possession and corners and getting opportunities, but we've just got to find ways to put those balls in the back of the net."
Pacific had 12 corner kicks to Saint Mary's three in Wednesday's matchup. The Tigers had five shots on goal, while the Gaels had four.
"I think as a group, it's just a matter of believing and finding that extra sense of urgency to put balls in the back of the net," continued Adams. "I think the last 10, 15 minutes we saw it from our team, but how do we do that earlier in the game and give ourselves opportunities to put teams away earlier? We're just going to keep working and get better in front of the goal, get better at attacking third, and find a way to put goals past BYU."
The Tigers and the Gaels have tied their last three meetings: 0-0 in 2020, 1-1 in 2021 and Wednesday night's 0-0 draw. The Gaels are on a two-game tie streak with five total draws, while the Tigers hadn't tied since September 18 against UC Santa Barbara, thanks to their consecutive win and loss against Santa Clara.
The Gaels tied BYU 0-0 in their meeting on October 1. Now the Tigers are set to host BYU Saturday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. after their 0-0 draw with Saint Mary's.
"Both teams gave it everything they had. It's a typical WCC conference game," said Co-Head Coach J.J. Wozniak. "There's not a lot of separation now. There can be if you capitalize on your moments, but everybody's good in our conference, and everybody is well-coached without a doubt. Saint Mary's is no different. They're well-coached, and their players compete. They get after it. They work hard. It was a WCC battle, and there wasn't much separation."
Following the Tigers' game against BYU on Saturday, they'll travel to Spokane to take on Gonzaga on Oct 15. That's where Wozniak says the roster's depth will help the Tigers: the quick turnaround time against prominent WCC opponents.
"The depth, it's a massive piece for our program, but I also feel like we've got to continue to get those on the field taking in all moments, and when they do come in, they make a difference," said Adams. "How do we then continue to rally with the core group that is on the field? We'll keep using our depth because we need to, and we need to grow."
